解説 Definition
君主が幼少・不在・病気などの理由で自ら統治できない間に、摂政が代わって国を治めること、またはその期間を指す名詞。文脈によっては、特に英国史の1811年から1820年までの「リージェンシー時代」を表すこともある。
A regency is a period when a country is ruled by a regent instead of the official monarch, usually because the ruler is too young or unable to rule. It can also mean the system of government during that time. The word is mainly used in history and politics.

regency は regent「摂政」+ -cy で、中世ラテン語 regentia「統治」に由来し、さらにラテン語 regere「まっすぐ導く・治める」にさかのぼる。『まっすぐ導く』が『支配する』になったので、王の代わりに国を治める役目という意味が腑に落ちる。関連語は reign, regime。
Regency comes from regent plus the noun ending -cy, and its deeper source is Latin regere, meaning "to guide straight" or "to rule." The idea of guiding or directing developed into the sense of governing. That is why regency came to mean the office, period, or system of ruling for a monarch; reign and regime are related words.
