解説 Definition
死後に別の人間や生物として生まれ変わることを意味します。仏教やヒンドゥー教などの宗教において重要な概念であり、輪廻転生とも呼ばれます。
Reincarnations are new lives or forms that someone is believed to have after death, especially in some religions and spiritual beliefs. The word can also be used more loosely for something that appears again in a different form. It usually carries the idea of returning, not simply repeating.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
re- は「再び」。まず reincarnation を1語で覚え、「同じ魂が別の body にもう一度入る」という絵で固定すると、複数形 reincarnations も自然に理解できます。incarnation は宗教語だけでなく「化身」の意味でも見かけるので、その仲間だと意識すると残りやすいです。belief in reincarnation, past incarnations のような形で出やすく、rebirth は広い「再生」、resurrection は「死者の復活」で別物だと分けておくと混同しません。

reincarnations は reincarnation の複数形。re-「再び」+ incarnate「肉体を与える」+ -ion で、ラテン語 caro/carn-「肉」にさかのぼり、「魂が再び肉体に入る」感覚から「生まれ変わり」になった。関連語は incarnate, carnal。
Reincarnations is the plural of reincarnation, from re- "again" and incarnation. Incarnation goes back to Latin caro or carn- meaning "flesh," also seen in incarnate and carnal. The original image is of entering flesh again, which developed into the idea of repeated bodily existence.
