解説 Definition
法律用語で、事件や裁判を別の法廷や上級の裁判所へ送り返して再審理や審査を受けさせることを指します。とくに下級裁判所の判断内容を検証するために案件を差し戻す場面で使われます。また、被疑者や被告人を裁判まで逮捕状なしで勾留するという意味もあります。
To remand means to send a case or a person back to another authority, especially in legal situations. A court may remand a case for further action, or remand a person into custody while they wait for trial.

re- に『戻す』の感覚があるので、remand はまず『元の場所・しかるべき所へ戻す』で覚えると整理しやすいです。日常の return や send back よりずっと法律寄りの堅い語で、remand a case to a lower court なら『事件を下級審に差し戻す』、be remanded in custody なら『拘留される』。意味が2つに見えても、どちらも『最終決着の前に、権限ある場へ戻して扱わせる』という1本のイメージでつながります。

remand は re-「戻して」+ mand「命じて委ねる」から成り、アングロ・フランス語経由でラテン語 mandare にさかのぼります。核は「命じて元へ戻す」で、差し戻しも拘留も権限ある場所へ送り返す感覚。mandate, demand も同根です。
Remand comes through Anglo-French from Latin mandare, meaning "to order" or "to entrust," with re- adding the sense of "back."
