repositories の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語repositoriumに由来します。re-(元へ)+語根pon(置く)+-itory(場所)の構成で、「物を元の所に戻して収める場所」が原義です。位置のpositionや預けるdepositも同根であり、データや物を安全に保管する所という現代的意味がすっきり納得できます。
Repositories is the plural of repository, formed by changing final y to i and adding -es. Repository entered English from Latin repositorium, “a place for storing things,” related to reponere, “to put back” or “store.” Reponere combines re-, “back,” with ponere, “to put or place.” The same broad Latin root appears in position and deposit. The word later extended naturally from physical storehouses to organized collections of documents, data, and software code.
