解説 Definition
獲物を回収するよう訓練された犬種の総称。ゴールデンレトリーバーやラブラドールなどが代表的。
Retrievers are dogs bred to bring back birds or other objects, especially for hunters. The word is also used for popular dog breeds such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers, which are known for being friendly and easy to train.

まず retrieve をひとかたまりで覚える。ニュースやITでも retrieve data「取り出す」が出るので、「いったん離れたものを取り戻す」感覚を持つとよい。-er は「〜するもの」、-s は複数だから retriever(s) は「回収してくる犬たち」。犬種名では Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever が定番。hound が追う犬なら、retriever は取って戻る犬、という対比で定着しやすい。

動詞 retrieve（取り戻す）の派生語で、古フランス語 retrouver（re- 再び＋trouver 見つける）が語源。retrieve＋-er（～する者）で「獲物を回収する犬」の意。関連語は retrieve（回収する）、trove（発見物）。猟で撃ち落とした鳥を拾い戻す役割から犬種名になった。
Retrievers comes from retrieve plus the agent ending -er, meaning "one that retrieves." Retrieve came through Old French from retrouver, literally "to find again." The word was used for hunting dogs that brought back shot birds, and from that use it became the name of the dog type. A related word is trove, from the same "find" family.
