Revelation comes through Old French and Latin revelatio from Latin revelare, “to uncover or disclose.” Revelare is traditionally analyzed through re- and velum, “veil,” giving the central image of removing a covering from something hidden. This developed into both the religious sense of divine truth being disclosed and the general sense of an important secret or unknown fact becoming known.
