それまで隠されていた事実や秘密、不正などが明るみに出ること、またはそれを明かす情報や出来事を指す。特に人を驚かせる新事実の発覚や、社会的に影響の大きい暴露について述べるときに使われる語。
A revelation is surprising information that becomes known, especially something previously hidden or secret. It is often used in news, personal stories, or public situations when an important truth is suddenly revealed.

revelation は古フランス語・ラテン語 revelatio 由来で、re- + velare「覆う、ヴェールをかける」に分けられます。つまり「覆いを取り去って見えるようにすること」で、隠されていた秘密や不正が明るみに出る「暴露・発覚」の意味になります。宗教文脈では「啓示」ですが、ニュースでは秘密の露見に結びつきます。
Revelation comes through Old French and Latin from revelatio. It is based on re- and velare, meaning "to cover with a veil," so the original image is of removing a covering. From this idea of uncovering, the word developed the sense of something hidden being made known, especially in a sacred or formal way.
