revelation は古フランス語・ラテン語 revelatio 由来で、re- + velare「覆う、ヴェールをかける」に分けられます。つまり「覆いを取り去って見えるようにすること」で、そこから神の真理が明かされる「啓示」の意味になりました。
Revelation comes through Old French and Latin from revelatio. It is based on re- and velare, meaning "to cover with a veil," so the original image is of removing a covering. From this idea of uncovering, the word developed the sense of something hidden being made known, especially in a sacred or formal way.
