rivalry は rival + -ry（状態・関係を表す接尾辞）から成ります。rival はラテン語 rivalis に由来し、さらに rivus（小川・水路）にさかのぼって、もとは「同じ川の水を使う者」でした。水を争う隣人という感覚から「ライバル関係」になった語です。関連語は rival, rivalrous。
Rivalry comes from rival plus the noun ending -ry, which shows a state or relationship. Rival goes back to Latin rivalis, which originally meant a person using the same stream or river, from rivus, "brook" or "stream." Because people sharing water could become competitors, the word developed into the idea of opposition and competition.
