roleplaying は、役割を演じること、またはその形式の活動を指す語です。日本語の「ロールプレイング」はゲームを連想しやすいですが、英語では研修や教育で役を演じる練習にも広く使われます。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
role(役割)とplaying(演じること)をそのまま結び付け、「ある役になって行動する活動」と捉えます。ゲームだけでなく、practice conversation、customer situations、training など、会話練習や研修の模擬場面にも使われる点を覚えましょう。
Break roleplaying into role and playing: it literally involves playing or acting out a role. Do not connect it only with fantasy games. Picture students practicing a polite conversation, employees responding to a difficult customer, or players speaking as characters in a story. Common combinations such as roleplaying exercise, roleplaying activity, and roleplaying game help preserve the central idea: someone temporarily adopts a particular position or identity and behaves accordingly.

roleplaying の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「role」と「playing」の合成語です。「role」はラテン語の「rotulus(巻物)」に由来し、演劇の台本が巻紙に書かれていたことから「割り当てられた役柄」を指すようになりました。特定の立場になりきって行動する意味に繋がり、同語根に「enroll」があります。
Roleplaying is formed from role and playing. Role entered English through French from Latin rotulus, meaning “small roll,” because an actor’s written part could be recorded on a roll of paper. Playing is the gerund of play. Together, the elements came to describe acting out an assigned character or social position, both in theatrical or game settings and in practical training exercises.
