爆弾などの起爆装置から信管を取り外して爆発の危険をなくすことです。緊迫した場面では、緊張や危機をやわらげて状況の悪化を防ぐ意味でも使われます。雰囲気が高ぶっているときに冷静さを取り戻し、事態を落ち着かせる働きもあります。
