rumen はラテン語 rumen「のど・反芻胃」に由来し、英語では反芻動物の第一胃を指す語になりました。ruminate や rumination も同根で、「いったん胃にためてまた噛む」感覚から、「反芻する」と「思い巡らす」が同じ根にあると分かります。
Rumen comes directly from Latin rumen, which meant "throat" and also the first stomach of a ruminant animal. The same root appears in ruminate and rumination. The idea connects physical chewing again with mental "chewing over," which is why the root later also produced words about deep thought.
