琉球の語源には諸説あり、中国の史書『隋書』に「流求」として初出する。琉は宝石の瑠璃、球は玉を意味し、美しい島々を宝玉に例えた漢字表記とされる。沖縄の古語「るーちゅー」の中国語音写という説が有力である。
