18世紀英語の scow はオランダ語 schouw「渡し舟・はしけ」からの借用。さらに中世オランダ語 scouwe にさかのぼり、岸から船を押し出すというゲルマン系の語と結び付けられる。関連形に schouw があり、『荷を運ぶ平底船』という姿が語義にそのまま残る。
Scow was borrowed into English in the 18th century from Dutch schouw, meaning a ferry boat or barge. It goes back to Middle Dutch and is linked with Germanic words connected to pushing a boat from the shore. In English, it came to mean a broad, flat-bottomed boat used for carrying heavy loads.
