seem は古ノルド語 soema「ふさわしい、合う」に由来し、もともと「見た目がその状態にかなっている」という感覚でした。だから『〜のように見える』は単なる視覚でなく『そう見えて筋が通る』に近く、seemly や beseem も同じ根です。
