seem は古ノルド語 soema「ふさわしい、合う」に由来し、もともと「見た目がその状態にかなっている」という感覚でした。だから『〜のように見える』は単なる視覚でなく『そう見えて筋が通る』に近く、seemly や beseem も同じ根です。
Seem comes from Old Norse soema, meaning "to fit" or "to be suitable." It first carried the idea that something appeared in a way that matched what was proper or expected. That is why seem developed from "be fitting" into the modern sense of "appear to be," and it is related to seemly and beseem.
