Seminarians are students who are studying in a seminary to become priests or other religious leaders. The word is mainly used in Christian contexts, especially in the Roman Catholic tradition. It refers to people in formal religious training.

seminary（神学校）に通う人たち、という形で覚えるのが最短です。seminar は「ゼミ・講義」なので形は似ていますが、seminarian は seminar の参加者ではなく、将来聖職者になるために seminary で学ぶ学生を指します。語尾の -ian は「〜に属する人」、-s が付いて複数。普通の students よりかなり限定された語で、train for the priesthood, study theology などの文脈と結びつけると、「宗教教育を受ける学生たち」という像で定着します。
This is easiest if you know `seminary`, a school for future clergy. A `seminarian` is a person studying there, not just someone in a `seminar`. The ending `-ian` often means "a person connected with something," and `-s` makes it plural.

ラテン語 seminarium（苗床、種まきの場）から。語根 semin- は semen（種）に由来し、seminary（神学校＝聖職者の種を育てる場）の学生を指す。seminar（ゼミ）も同根で、知識の種をまく場という比喩でつながる。
seminarians comes from seminary, which goes back to Latin seminarium, meaning "seed bed" or "place for planting." That word was built from semen, meaning "seed," a root also seen in seminar. The idea shifted from a place where seeds are grown to a place where future church leaders are trained, and seminarians are the people being formed there.
