覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
shad はニシン科の魚で、海で育ち産卵のため川へ上る種類が代表的です。salmon と同じ「海から川へ戻る魚」の場面を思い浮かべつつ、形や分類は herring に近いと整理しましょう。複数形も通常 shad のままなので、one shad、several shad と覚えると実用的です。
Remember shad as a silvery relative of the herring that often travels from the sea into rivers to reproduce. Its migration resembles the familiar life pattern of salmon, but shad belongs to the herring family and should not be treated as a kind of salmon. The word commonly keeps the same form in the plural: one shad and several shad. Associations such as a shad run, when many fish move upriver, and American shad, a well-known species, connect the short name with the fish’s characteristic appearance and behavior.

shad の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語 shad、古英語 sceadd にさかのぼる古い魚名。それ以前の起源は不明で、ケルト語や北欧諸語との関係も確定していない。綴りの似た scad との語源的関係も証明されていない。
Shad is an old Germanic fish name. It appears in Middle English as shadde and goes back to Old English sceadd. Its origin before Old English is uncertain, and proposed connections with Celtic or Scandinavian words have not been firmly established. The similar-looking fish name scad is best treated separately rather than as a proven relative. The modern spelling preserves a very old English name for this member of the herring family.
