A stoker is a worker whose job is to feed fuel into a fire, furnace, or steam engine. The word is mainly used in older industrial, railway, or ship contexts. It is now less common in everyday modern English.

stoker はオランダ語 stoken「突く・火をくべる」からで、語幹 stok- は棒で突く動作を表す。-er は「する人」で、stoke や stock と同根だと分かると、炉を棒で絶えず突いて火力を保つ役目がそのまま語になったと腑に落ちる。
Stoker comes from stoke, with the agent ending -er meaning "a person who does something." Stoke came from Dutch stoken, meaning to poke, thrust, or feed a fire. So stoker originally meant a person who keeps a fire going, especially by poking and feeding fuel into it.
