stoke はオランダ語 stoken「棒で突く・かき立てる」に由来し、英語では炉の火に燃料をくべて勢いをつける意味になりました。もとの「棒で突いて動かす」感覚が残っているので、「火をたく」「感情をあおる」の両方に広がり、stoker や stock と同根です。
Stoke comes from Dutch stoken, meaning "to poke with a stick" or "to stir up." In English it first developed around feeding and stirring a fire, and then widened to mean encouraging or intensifying something. The older sense of pushing or stirring is still felt in both uses.
