Shampoo came into English from Hindi chāmpo, an imperative meaning “massage!” or “press!”, from chāmpnā, “to press, knead, or massage.” In early Anglo-Indian use, the word referred to massage rather than a cleansing product. Because scalp massage often accompanied washing and grooming, its meaning shifted to washing the hair and eventually to the liquid preparation used for that purpose.
