ラテン語 signum（しるし・印）から古フランス語 signe を経て英語 sign となり、-ing は動名詞接尾辞。signal（信号）や signature（署名）が同根語。契約や合意の「しるし」を記す行為が原義で、契約締結や手話の意味にも広がった。
"Signing" is built from sign plus the ending -ing. "Sign" came through Old French from Latin signum, meaning "mark," "token," or "symbol."
