古英語 singan（声で旋律を奏でる）に動名詞接尾辞 -ing が付いた形。ゲルマン祖語 *singwaną に遡り、ドイツ語 singen と同根。関連語: song（歌）、singer（歌手）。「声を響かせる」という原義がそのまま現代に受け継がれている。
From Old English singan, with the noun ending -ing added to form the activity noun. It goes back to Proto-Germanic *singwaną and is related to German singen, as well as English song and singer. The core idea, using the voice in melody, has stayed almost unchanged.
