古英語 singan（声で旋律を奏でる）に動名詞接尾辞 -ing が付いた形。ゲルマン祖語 *singwaną に遡り、ドイツ語 singen と同根。関連語: song（歌）、singer（歌手）。「声を響かせる」という原義がそのまま現代に受け継がれている。
