サンスクリット語 sindhu（सिन्धु）に由来し、本来は「大河」特にインダス川を指す。ペルシャ語で s が h に変化して Hindu となり、さらに India の語源にもなった。シンド地方で話される言語を指し、river や India と深い語源的つながりを持つ。
Sindhi is formed from Sindh, the regional name, with a suffix indicating association or origin. Sindh ultimately traces back to Sanskrit sindhu, a word for a river and especially the Indus. Through later Iranian and Greek forms, the same ancient geographical name also contributed to Hindu and India. Sindhi consequently means the language or culture associated with Sindh, not simply “river” in current usage.
