雪と雨が混じった降水で、空から凍った粒が落ちてくる。見た目は吹雪と雨の中間で、冷たい空気を伴うことが多い。積もる前に地面で溶けたり、路面を滑りやすくしたりする。
Sleet is a kind of weather in which rain and snow fall together, or rain partly freezes into small ice pellets. It is common in cold conditions around winter. The word is mainly used in weather reports and daily talk about bad weather.

sleet の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sleet は中英語 slete、さらに古英語系のゲルマン語にさかのぼる古い天気語で、はっきりした接頭辞分解はありません。語源段階では「雹まじりの冷たい降り物」の感触そのものを名づけた語で、関連語に sleety、同系語にデンマーク語 slud があります。
Sleet comes from Middle English slete and goes back to older Germanic weather words. It does not clearly break into smaller parts. The word seems to have named the cold, mixed feel of icy falling weather itself, and it is related to Danish slud and the English form sleety.
