市場・勝負・業界予測などで、情報や経験を持つ事情通が有力だと考える見方や予想。一般の人々の意見よりも、詳しい人の判断として信頼できそうだという響きがあります。
An informed view or prediction held by people with expertise or inside knowledge, especially in markets, betting, politics, or industry forecasts. It suggests a more reliable judgment than ordinary public opinion.
使い方 Usage
- the smart money is on ～ は「事情通は～が有力と見ている」。on の後に候補名や動名詞を含む句を置きます。 The smart money is on X means informed people consider X likely. After on, use a candidate's name or a phrase containing a gerund.
- smart money says ＋ 文で「事情通の見方では～だ」と予想を伝えられます。 Use smart money says followed by a clause to report what informed people predict.

smart money の語源・成り立ち Etymology
もともとは賭けや金融市場で、経験豊富な人が動かす資金を指した表現。その資金の動きが有力な判断を示すと見なされたため、やがて「事情通の予想・見方」という抽象的な意味でも使われるようになった。
The phrase originally referred to money placed or invested by experienced people in betting or financial markets. Because that money was seen as reflecting informed judgment, the expression broadened to mean an informed prediction or view.
