Etymology
The unit name smoot comes directly from the surname of Oliver R. Smoot, an MIT student used as a human measuring rod in a 1958 fraternity prank. His classmates measured Harvard Bridge by moving him end over end and marking successive lengths. The resulting measurement, famously expressed as 364.4 smoots plus or minus one ear, became part of MIT tradition. Thus, smoot is an eponym rather than a word inherited from an older unit or language.
