scabies はラテン語 scabies「かゆみ、皮膚病」に由来し、その奥には scabere「ひっかく」があります。scab や scabrous と同じ scab- 系で、「かゆくて掻いてしまう状態」がそのまま疥癬という病名になったとわかります。
