snooker の語源・成り立ち Etymology
snooker は19世紀末の英軍俗語で、新米士官候補生を指す snooker から生まれた語で、語源自体ははっきりしません。ビリヤードで「初心者みたいに不利な位置に置く」感覚から競技名・状態名になり、snookered も同語源です。
The name arose in British military slang in India during the late nineteenth century. Snooker was then used for an inexperienced cadet or newcomer, though the earlier origin of that slang term is uncertain. The term was applied jokingly to inexperienced players of a newly developed cue game and subsequently became the established name of the sport. The related verb snooker and adjective snookered developed from the same word.
