「snuffy」は snuff「鼻で吸う、鼻を鳴らす」に -y が付いた語で、snuff はオランダ語 snuf に由来するゲルマン系です。sniff や snuffle も同じ「鼻で短く吸う」語族で、鼻を鳴らすようないら立った様子から、不機嫌で気難しいことを表す形容詞になりました。
Snuffy comes from snuff with the adjective ending -y. Snuff, in the sense of breathing in sharply or making a sound through the nose, came from Dutch snuf and belongs to a Germanic word family that also includes sniff and snuffle. From the image of irritably snorting through the nose, snuffy came to mean ill-tempered or difficult.
