spun は spin「回す・紡ぐ」の不規則な過去形・過去分詞で、ここでは過去分詞が形容詞化し「繊維をより合わせて紡いだ」を表します。spin–spun–spun とまとめ、spun yarn「紡いだ糸」の場面で覚えましょう。母音は spin の /ɪ/ から spun の /ʌ/ に変わり、規則形の spinned にはしません。
Link spun directly to the irregular verb pattern spin–spun–spun. In the fiber-related sense, spinning means twisting and drawing fibers into thread, so spun yarn is yarn that has already been made in this way. Notice both the spelling change and the vowel change: spin has /ɪ/, while spun has /ʌ/. Do not form the past tense as spinned. Although spun can function as a verb in “she spun the wool,” it acts as an adjective before a noun in combinations such as spun silk, spun yarn, or finely spun thread.
