stafferは英語staffに行為者を表す接尾辞-erが付いた語。staffは古英語staf「棒」にさかのぼり、staffやflagstaffと同根で、指導者を支える棒の比喩から「職員」が生まれたと分かる。
Staffer was formed in English from staff plus the ending -er, which often means "a person connected with something." Staff goes back to Old English staf, meaning "stick" or "rod," seen also in words like flagstaff. From the image of a supporting stick, staff later came to mean a group that supports an organization, and staffer grew from that.
