modernismはラテン語modo「たった今」に由来するmodernus「現代の」に、思想や運動を示す接尾辞-ismが付いた語。つまり「今の時代を旗印にする考え方」が原義で、過去の様式から意識的に離れる響きをもつ。modernやmodernityも同根で、新しさが価値観へ育つ流れが見える。
Modernism comes from modern, which comes from Latin modernus, based on modo meaning "just now." With the suffix -ism, it originally meant a way of thinking or a movement centered on what is current and new. The word came to suggest a conscious break from older styles and traditions.
