A steeplechase is a race in which runners or horses must jump over barriers and sometimes water obstacles. It is used especially in athletics and horse racing. The word refers to a race that tests both speed and the ability to clear obstacles.

まず chase=「追いかける」を核に置くと、ただ走る race ではなく、前を追いながら障害を越えて進む競走だと映像で覚えやすいです。steeplechase は一語で「柵・水濠つきのレース」を連想すると定着します。単なる sprint や marathon ではなく、obstacle を伴う race だと押さえるのがコツ。horse racing でも athletics でも使えますが、hurdles よりも『長く走りつつ越える』競技という感覚で区別すると覚えやすいです。

steeplechaseはsteeple「教会の尖塔」（古英語stēpel）とchase「追跡」（古フランス語chace）を合わせた語です。もとは遠くの教会の尖塔を目印に野原を駆けた競走で、そこから障害物を越えて進む「障害競走」の意味になりました。関連語はchase、chaserです。
Steeplechase is a compound of steeple and chase. Steeple comes from Old English stepel, and chase came through Old French from a verb meaning "hunt" or "pursue." The word first referred to races run across open country toward a church steeple used as a marker, and later came to mean an obstacle race.
