steeplechaseはsteeple「教会の尖塔」（古英語stēpel）とchase「追跡」（古フランス語chace）を合わせた語です。もとは遠くの教会の尖塔を目印に野原を駆けた競走で、そこから障害物を越えて進む「障害競走」の意味になりました。関連語はchase、chaserです。
Steeplechase is a compound of steeple and chase. Steeple comes from Old English stepel, and chase came through Old French from a verb meaning "hunt" or "pursue."
