stunt の語源・成り立ち Etymology

見せ場や離れ業を表す名詞 stunt は、19世紀末から20世紀初頭のアメリカ英語で、目立つ妙技や危険な演技を指す語として使われるようになりました。ただし詳しい由来は確定しておらず、「成長を妨げる」という古い動詞 stunt との歴史的関係にも異説があります。

The entertainment noun stunt appeared in American English around the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, first for striking feats and later prominently for dangerous performances in aviation and film. Its precise development is not fully certain. English also has an older verb stunt, “to prevent normal growth,” associated with an old adjective meaning short or blunt, but the historical connection between that word and the performance noun is disputed. It is therefore safest not to treat the two senses as a proven single development.
