スタイリングとは、髪型や服装、インテリアなどの外観を整えたり美しく仕上げたりする行為や技術のことです。ファッション業界では、モデルや撮影のために衣装や小物を組み合わせてコーディネートすることを指します。美容業界では特に、ヘアスタイリングとして髪を整えることを意味します。

Begin with the verb style, “to arrange or design the appearance of something.” To form styling, drop the silent final e before adding -ing. As a noun, styling names the activity or technique itself. Organize the meaning around three useful combinations: hair styling shapes and arranges hair; fashion styling selects and combines clothes and accessories; product styling develops or presents a product’s visual appearance. In every case, the central idea is deliberate control of how something looks. This distinguishes styling from style, which more often names the resulting appearance or a characteristic manner.

ラテン語 stilus（書き道具、尖筆）→古フランス語 estile を経て英語 style に。接尾辞 -ing で「スタイルを整える行為」を表す。関連語：style（様式）、stylus（尖筆）。元は文章の書き方を指したが、外見や装飾の整え方全般へ意味が拡張した。
Styling is formed from style by dropping the final e and adding -ing. Style ultimately comes from Latin stilus, a pointed writing instrument, through Old French forms such as stile. Because a person’s characteristic way of writing could be identified by how the instrument was used, the word developed from “manner of writing” to “distinctive manner” more generally. It later extended to fashion, design, hair, and other forms of visual arrangement.
