スチレン
解説 Definition
styrene は、プラスチックや合成樹脂の原料になる化学物質「スチレン」です。化学・工業の文脈で使われます。
Styrene is a colorless to yellowish organic liquid used mainly as a chemical building block in manufacturing plastics, resins, rubber, and related materials. It can polymerize to form polystyrene and is monitored as a vapor in industrial environments.
使い方 Usage
- use styrene to make plastic は「スチレンを使ってプラスチックを作る」。製造の原料を説明する形です。 Use styrene to make plastic describes styrene being used as a raw material in manufacturing.
- styrene levels は「スチレン濃度」。空気中の濃度なら styrene levels in the air と表せます。 Styrene levels refers to styrene concentrations. Styrene levels in the air specifies concentrations in air.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
styrene と polystyrene を一組で覚えましょう。poly- は「多数の」で、多数の styrene 分子がつながった材料が polystyrene です。
Learn styrene and polystyrene as a pair. Poly- means many: polystyrene is the material formed when many styrene molecules join together.
例文
Styrene is used to make some kinds of plastic.
スチレンは一部のプラスチックを作るために使われます。
The factory monitors styrene levels in the air.
その工場は空気中のスチレン濃度を監視しています。

styrene の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 styrax(安息香樹の樹脂)に由来し、化学接尾辞 -ene(不飽和炭化水素)を付けた造語。元々この樹脂から抽出された化合物であることから命名された。関連語:polystyrene(ポリスチレン)、styrax(安息香)。素材名の由来が天然樹脂にある。
The name styrene is historically connected with storax, also called styrax, an aromatic resin from which the substance was first isolated. The resin name ultimately comes through Latin from Greek styrax. Chemists formed the modern substance name using a version of that base and the chemical ending -ene, used in names of unsaturated compounds. Polystyrene was later named for the polymer produced from many styrene units.
