If food is raw, it has not been cooked. More generally, raw can mean natural, basic, or not yet processed or refined. It can also describe strong, direct qualities such as raw emotion or raw talent.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
raw は cooked の反対として入れると覚えやすいです。raw meat は「生肉」、raw materials は「原材料」、raw data は「未加工データ」。どれも共通する核は「まだ手が加わっていないこと」。fresh が「新鮮さ」を言う語なのに対し、raw は「未調理・未処理」に重点があります。さらに raw emotion なら、理性で整えられていないむき出しの感情。食品だけでなく、素材・情報・感情まで一貫して「加工前」でつなぐと忘れにくいです。
Remember it as the opposite of `cooked` or `processed`. `Raw meat`, `raw data`, and `raw materials` all share the same idea: something in its original state, before work has been done on it. That is why `raw emotion` also works: feelings not softened or controlled yet.
