解説 Definition

願望、必要、提案、仮定、反事実など、現実そのものではなく話し手の気持ちや想定を表すときに使われる文法形式・法を指す名詞。英語では限られた形で現れるが、スペイン語やフランス語ではより体系的に用いられる。

The subjunctive is a grammar form used for wishes, suggestions, demands, and unreal or imagined situations. In English, it appears in certain fixed patterns rather than in many everyday verb forms. It is mainly discussed in grammar study and formal writing.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

subjunctive は『事実をそのまま述べる形』ではなく、『現実から半歩ずらして、願望・提案・必要・仮定を置くモード』として覚えると残りやすいです。suggest / insist / demand that ...、It is important that ...、if I were you のように、話し手が“現実の報告”ではなく“こうあってほしい・こう想定する”を述べる場面で出やすい語。indicative が事実モードなら、subjunctive は想定モード。原形や were が現れたら subjunctive の合図、と結び付けると判別しやすくなります。

Link `subjunctive` to classic school examples like `If I were you` and `I wish I had...`. Those forms feel a little "shifted" from normal tense, which helps you notice unreal or unlikely situations. When you see `were` with `I/he/she`, it is often a clue.

subjunctive の語源・成り立ち Etymology

subjunctive はラテン語 subjunctivus に由来し、sub-「下に」+ junct「結ぶ」+ -ive「…の性質をもつ」で成ります。joinjunction も同根で、『主節に従属して結び付く形』と考えると、事実でなく願望・仮定を表す法だと腑に落ちます。

Subjunctive comes from Latin subjunctivus, from sub- "under" and a form of jungere "to join." The name originally suggested something "joined under" another part, because this verb form was often used in clauses dependent on a main clause. From that grammatical idea, it became the name of the mood used for wishes, possibilities, and unreal situations. Related English words include join and junction.
