解説 Definition
表土の下にある土の層を指す名詞。一般に有機物は表土より少なく、粘土や鉱物を多く含む。植物の根が深く伸びる場所であり、排水性や保水性、耕作条件を考えるうえで重要な土層で、土木や考古学でも使われる。
Subsoil is the layer of soil under the topsoil, closer to the ground below. It usually has less organic material and fewer nutrients than the top layer. The word is common in farming, gardening, and earth science.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sub- は submarine, subway のように「下」を表すことが多く、soil はそのまま「土」。なので subsoil は「下の土」と切ると覚えやすいです。特に topsoil（表土）との対比で覚えると定着しやすく、畑や庭で上のやわらかい層を掘ると、その下にある重く鉱物っぽい層が subsoil。園芸・農業では roots reach the subsoil のように、根が深く伸びる先の土という場面と結びつけると忘れにくいです。
