Callousness is a lack of kindness or concern for other people's feelings or suffering. It describes a cold, hard attitude, especially when someone does not seem moved by pain or difficulty. The word is often used in serious criticism of behavior.

callousness は、まず形を callous + -ness と分けて見ると覚えやすいです。-ness は「性質・状態」を作るので、「callous であること」＝無神経さ。callous は rude より一段冷たく、相手が傷つくこと自体を気にかけない感じで、heartless に近い語感です。show callousness toward others, shocking callousness のように、思いやりの欠如を強く非難する文脈でよく出ます。careless「不注意」と混同しないのがコツです。

callousness は callous + -ness。callous はラテン語 callum / callus「硬い皮膚・たこ」に由来し、callus や callosity も同根です。皮膚が硬くなるイメージが心にも移り、「鈍感さ・無神経さ」を表すようになりました。
Callousness is formed from callous and the noun ending -ness. Callous comes from Latin callum or callus, meaning hard skin or a thickened spot, the same root seen in callus and callosity.
