tarmacは20世紀英語のtar「タール」とmacadam「砕石舗装」の合成語です。John McAdam式の道路にタールをしみ込ませた舗装を指したので、空港のtarmacも本来は滑走路一般でなく「タールを使った舗装面」だとわかります。macadamizeが近い語です。
