tarpaulin は tar「タール」と、ラテン語 pallium が古フランス語を経て英語に入った pall「覆い布」にさかのぼる語。船で使うタール引きの布が原義で、塗って水を防ぐ発想がそのまま「防水シート」になった。関連語は pall, palliate。
Tarpaulin comes from tar and paulin, an older word for a cloth covering. The second part goes back through French to Latin pallium, meaning a cloak or covering, which is also related to pall. The word originally meant a cloth treated with tar for ships, and from that it came to mean any strong waterproof sheet.
