tarpは tarpaulin の短縮形で、tar「タール」は古英語、後半は pall「覆い布」にさかのぼる。tar や pall と同系で、「布にタールを塗って雨を防ぐ覆い」という原形を知ると、防水シートの意味がそのまま見える。
