foil の「箔」は古フランス語 foille、さらにラテン語 folium「葉」に由来し、薄い金属片を葉のように見た語です。宝石の下に箔を敷いて美しさを引き立てたことから「引き立て役」の意味も生まれ、foliage や folio と同じ根だと分かります。
This sense of foil comes from Old French foille, which goes back to Latin folium, meaning "leaf." The word was used for a very thin piece of metal because it looked like a leaf.
