勇敢で尊敬される行動をした人物。映画や歴史上の人物など、特に偉大な功績を成し遂げた人を指します。
A hero is a person who is admired for being brave, strong, or morally good. The word is often used for someone who helps others, saves people, or does something very important. It can also be used more generally for a person you respect greatly.

物語・映画・劇などで中心となって描かれる人物を指す語。必ずしも勇敢な人や善人を意味せず、話がその人物を軸に進むときに使う。作品紹介や登場人物の説明で多く、日常では出来事の中心人物をたとえて言う場合もある。
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
hero は物語では「話の中心に立つ人物」として覚えると、この語義がぶれにくいです。war hero や local hero のような「英雄・称賛される人」とは切り分けて、the hero of the novel / movie なら、勇敢かどうかより物語がその人物を軸に進むということ。villain と戦う善人とは限らず、弱さや欠点を持つ主人公にも使えます。作品紹介で hero が出たら、まず「中心人物・主人公」と読むと自然です。
