protagonist はギリシャ語 prōtagōnistēs に由来し、prōto-「第一の」+ agōn「競技・争い」から成ります。もとは舞台で「最初の役者、主役」の意で、antagonist や agony も同じ agōn に連なると分かると、物語の中心人物という意味が腑に落ちます。
Protagonist comes from Greek prōtagōnistēs, built from prōto- meaning "first" and agōnistēs meaning "actor" or "contestant." It first meant the main actor in a play, especially the one who took the leading role. Later, it came to mean the central character in any story. English words like antagonist and agony come from the same Greek root agōn, "contest" or "struggle."
