Tethering means connecting one device to another to share an internet connection, especially sharing mobile data from a phone to a laptop. It can also mean tying an animal or object with a rope or chain so it cannot move far.

まず tether = ひもでつなぐ を核に置くと覚えやすい。-ing が付くので「つないでいること」「つなぎ留める行為」。スマホの tethering も意味の芯は同じで、回線を他の機器に貸すというより、親機の通信に“ひも付けする”感じ。tie や connect より、離れないよう保持するニュアンスが強いので、動物をロープでつなぐ用法と通信回線共有を一つのイメージで結べる。untether は逆に切り離す。
