合計する
解説 Definition
totalling は total の現在分詞・動名詞で、金額などを足して「合計する」、または「総計で〜になる」ことを表します。主にイギリス英語の綴りで、アメリカ英語では通常 totaling と書きます。
Totalling is the British spelling of the present participle and gerund of total. It means adding amounts to calculate a sum or, when followed by an amount, collectively reaching that sum.
使い方 Usage
- totalling the costs のように、後ろに足し上げる対象を置くと「費用を合計する」という作業を表します。 Totalling followed by the items being added describes the calculation, as in totalling the costs.
- expenses totalling £200 のように、後ろに合計額を置くと「合計200ポンドの費用」を表します。 Totalling followed by an amount states the combined sum, as in expenses totalling £200.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
total「合計する」に -ing を付け、主にイギリス英語では l を重ねて totalling とします。複数の金額を一つの total「合計」にまとめるイメージで覚えましょう。l が二つでも、発音に l の音が一つ増えるわけではありません。
Connect total with bringing several amounts into one sum. British spelling usually doubles the final l before -ing: totalling. American English normally uses totaling. The doubled letter does not add another l sound.
例文
She spent the afternoon totalling the monthly costs.
彼女は午後をかけて月々の費用を合計しました。
The team is totalling the votes before announcing the result.
チームは結果を発表する前に票を集計しています。
She has receipts totalling more than 200 dollars.
彼女は合計額が200ドルを超える領収書を持っています。

totalling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
totalling は total「全体の、総計の」から来た形で、現在分詞・動名詞として使われます。total は中世ラテン語 totalis、さらにラテン語 totus「全部の」にさかのぼるため、「全部を一つにまとめる」が合計するの核です。関連語は total, totality。
Totalling is formed from the verb total plus -ing, with the final l doubled according to the usual British spelling convention. The American spelling is generally totaling. Total entered English through French and Medieval Latin totalis, derived from Latin totus, meaning “whole” or “entire.” The verbal sense developed naturally from the noun and adjective: to total figures is to combine them into a whole sum, while figures totaling an amount collectively reach that sum.
