覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Tracy は英語圏で男女どちらにも使われる個人名で、一般名詞の意味を推測する語ではありません。文中では本来 Tracy と大文字で始め、meet Tracy、Tracy organized ... のように人を指します。姓から名として使われるようになった背景と結び付け、人物の性別は名前だけで決めず、代名詞や文脈で確認すると覚えましょう。
Treat Tracy as a person’s name, not as a common noun whose meaning must be translated. In normal writing, capitalize it: Tracy. It can be used for people of different genders, so do not infer someone’s gender from the name alone; check pronouns or other context. Remember it in natural patterns such as “I met Tracy,” “Tracy organized the event,” and “Tracy is an excellent swimmer.” Its history as a surname that later became a given name also helps explain why it can function as both a family name and a personal name.

tracy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
アイルランド系の姓で、古フランス語 Tracy(地名)に由来。ノルマンディーの地名 Traciacum から来ており、ガリア・ローマ時代のラテン語人名 Thracius(トラキア人)に遡る。元は「トラキア出身の人の土地」を意味する姓が人名に転じたもの。
Tracy was first established as a surname associated with Norman place-names in France, including Tracy. Those place-names are generally traced to a Gallo-Roman estate name formed from the Latin personal name Thracius and a place-forming suffix, giving the sense of an estate belonging to Thracius. The surname reached England and Ireland through Norman families. In later English usage, Tracy was transferred from a family name to a given name and came to be used for more than one gender.
