The English name Troy comes through Latin Troia from ancient Greek Troia. In Greek tradition, the city’s name was associated with Tros, an ancestral king of the Trojans, although the historical place was also called Ilion or Ilios. The name became central to European literature through Homer’s Iliad and later accounts of the Trojan War. Its later use as an English masculine given name derives from the famous place name. The measurement term troy has a separate history connected with Troyes in France.
