アフリカ系アメリカ人の俗語に由来し、「twist(ねじる)」と「jerk(急に動かす)」の混成語、または「work(体を動かす)」の変形とされる。1990年代にニューオーリンズのバウンス音楽シーンで広まり、2013年頃に主流文化に浸透した比較的新しいダンス用語。
Twerking is the -ing form of twerk, a term that developed in African American usage and became prominent in the New Orleans bounce music scene during the 1990s. Its earlier formation is uncertain. It has often been explained as a blend involving twist and jerk, or as a modified form associated with work, but these accounts are not securely established. The word spread far beyond its original regional and musical context and entered mainstream international usage in the early 2010s.
